Stephanie Triplett-Kultur-Texte Kapitel 9

Among this week's culture texts I found the article on Germany's Patriotism Problem particularly interesting, though I wish the author would have discussed the rationale for the lack of flags in greater detail.  His/her (?) dismissal of the historical implications of German nationalism seemed hasty and glib, especially since the other historical associations he mentions (e.g., the 1848 revolutions) are not as recent or politically charged and he doesn't even bring up the use of the flag by contemporary far-right parties.

The Brennpunkt Kultur on "Berufswahl und Berufsausbildung in deutschsprachigen Ländern"was similarly enlightening. Determining someone's general career path from the 3rd/4th grade seems early and premature, though the sense of stability it provides might have benefits over the US system of switching majors multiple times and then leaving university with no specific training or guarantee of a job.  I also enjoyed the articles on German bureaucracy and neighborly behavior, though I was left unsure of how strictly this "Ruhezeit" is enforced.
