I listened to a few of the podcasts by Kristen Winkler
called Sprichwörtlich Deustsch and in episode 11 I learned "den Löffel
abgeben" We learned that der Löffel is a spoon and abgeben is to hand
something in or hand something over. The saying means to hand the spoon up or
to hand it over. This term is somewhat similar to the phrases "bite the
dust" or “pushing up daisies” in English
because it means that someone has died. In the old days of Germany everyone had
a personal spoon for eating and after you died you would give up your spoon
because you no longer needed it. So this phase is to signify that someone has
died or "turned in their spoon" It is a phase you must be careful
using and whom you use it around people such as your family or friends when referring
to someone you do not know that well or when talking about a pet. It would be
insensitive to use it when referring to someone you or someone else is really
close with.
