AMD 5, Richard Popp III

I read the Deutsch Märchen Rapunzel for my AMD 5. I was curious if a fairy tale this popular would be different the way Cinderella was compared to the American version and more specifically, if it was, how. After reading Repunzel auf Deutsch I learned that it's not all that different. Some parts were of course a little different but nothing really stuck out. For instance, in the American version the prince jumps out of the building in anger and hurts his eyes. In the German version it is a bit more graphic. The prince falls into thorny bushes that upon his landing pierce his eyes and render him blind.
On a more ambiguous note, the German version of Repunzel seemed a little darker to me. After I read the German version I refreshed my memory by reading the American version. While reading the American version I realized the word choices in different scenarios and noticed a difference. I know that in America fairy tales are something that children grow up with. I'm not exactly sure how Germans feel about fairy tales but I imagine they view them similarly to the way we view them. Now, when it comes to the overall feeling of this tale, the German version seems darker. This is a highly speculative question I pose but could the small differences in our respective versions be a reflection on our respective societies. More specifically, how we raise our children? Dumb question maybe but then again maybe its something worth looking into.
In terms of grammar and reading the piece, I've noticed how much more I recognize reading something at this point in the semester even relative to the beginning of the semester. It's a lot less frustrating to read something and not have to stop ever four seconds to look something up.
