Kultur 9, Alex Hodge

The "German Certificate Fetish" was kind of expected for me, especially since the stereotypical German love of order has been heavily emphasized in previous articles. I'm very glad, though, that I am not expected to keep track of all my certifications and little scraps of paper. The lack of documentation would lead everyone to believe I couldn't do anything.
The article about German patriotism, or the lack thereof, didn't come as a surprise to me, either. Although I don't exactly remember how, I had been made aware of the utter lack of patriotic flag-waving in Germany some time in the past. It makes sense, given the correlation between rises in German nationalism and horrendously terrifying world wars. I'd have some trepidation, too, if my nation recognized the darker parts of its history.
Finally, the article detailing the pitfalls of German neighborliness was kind of amusing. I must admit, I was a bit startled by the existence of flexible and non-concrete set of rules governing anything. I didn't think that ambiguity had any place in the monolithic German bureaucracy. The little spats between neighbors over the noise produced by frogs or pet dogs were also rather amusing. However, I was a bit taken aback by the general prohibition of car washing. I consider myself a gear-head, and an unwashed car would just not fly with me.
