AMD3, Aubrey

Well I finally watched Inglorious Basterds. I figured it was about time and wanted to be in the loop, as it would seem that most people in German class have watched it. I avoided it for a long time because of its renown for being super gory, but when I watched it I didn't think it was that bad. I actually really enjoyed it. It was really interesting to see all the crossings of language: German, French, English, Italian. It seems as if everyone has figured how to use language against each other and to spot fraud when characters are spies. There are two things I absolutely loved about this movie. First... Brad Pitt's horribly American accent when he tries to pass himself as an Italian. Second: the end of the movie where they burn down the theatre while playing a projection that Emmanuelle and Marcel have spliced into the film real. I couldn't get past how artistic, awesome and powerful it was.

It was also exciting to see how much German I understood. Most of the time, I caught on to the adjectives and nouns. There were a lot of verbs that either weren't in my vocabulary or that were two part verbs, which always confuses me. I also caught on to a lot of prepositions and enjoyed double checking my grammar with them. Nerdy, I know.

A while ago in German club we played a game where we had to ask questions about a character which was taped to our foreheads. They played this same exact game in the movie.... is this some sort of really common party game for Germans or is it just a coincidence? I was also curious to know how German's took this movie, so I looked it up. Turns out, this movie easily jumped to top on their lists and the lines to see it in theatre were very long.
