For this AMD, I chose to spend some
time navigating around FC Bayern Munich’s German website. Bayern is by far my
favorite soccer team, and I have looked around the English version of their
website periodically to search for news, merchandise, etc. It was cool to
change it up a bit and view the website in German to see how much I was able to
understand.
The
first thing that I noticed right off the bat was some of the lack of German
equivalents. For instance, one side advertisement read “Cool & Warm: Unsere
must haves Für die kalte Jahreszeit” This was rather entertaining to me, as I guess
there is no exact German equivalent for “must haves.” Additionally, I noticed
that “newsletter” was the same, as were “website”, “ticketing”, “fan-shop”, “kids
club”, and “teams”.
Moving
on, looking through the different parts of the website, I was able to
understand a decent amount of what the words meant. For instance, there was an
article entitled “2 Tage vor Arsenal.” Now, being an active Bayern fan, as well
as having more German understanding from this course, I was able to recognize
the fact that this meant “2 days before Arsenal,” referring to the first leg of
the Champions League matchup with Arsenal on Tuesday. Additionally, there were
a few news videos that I watched on the website, and I was able to understand
some of what was being said, even though they were speaking a bit fast. I
noticed usage of certain verbs we have recently learned, most notably being “vorbereiten”,
again in reference to preparing for Tuesday’s match. There was also a fair
amount of usage of the soccer vocabulary that we previously learned in Kapitel
7. Overall, I liked looking through the authentic German site for Bayern
Munich, and I was pleased with the fact that I was able to understand some
aspects of it.
