The article "Breaking Down the Wall in the Head" makes sense though. When the wall fell, no doubt the East side's industries could not compete with the west (a competitive, free market will do that) so they felt like they were overwhelmed by these "know it all" West Germans. One wuote from the "Backward Southerners" article stuck out to me:

"People in the cool, practical, intellectual, industrialized, liberal north of Germany think the lazy hick farmers in the south are backward and racist, and they talk funny too."

Sound familiar? It's just like America (and many other countries). I wonder why this phenomenon is so commone I guess the climate must really effect people's way of life (whereas eas vs west doesn't so much).

The last article mentioned table tennis courts... its this a ridiculous term for ping pong? I guess now that I say it, "ping pong" does sound kind of off too. Finally, I loved this line: "There were fights and drunken backgammon sessions resulting in heads breaking windows." :)
