For AMD 6, I watched a German movie called Nordwand. It tells the true story of the tragedy that took place when a team of two Austrian climbers and another team of two German climbers raced to the be the first people ever to climb The Eiger in the Swiss Alps. Just prior to the 1936 Olympics, the Nazi propaganda pushed climbers of the Third Reich to try and climb the last mountain in the Swiss Alps that no one had summited. An Italian team also showed up but decided not to climb. On the first day of climbing, one of the Austrian climbers got hit in the head by a falling rock. He decides to continue climbing instead of going down for help. This injury eventually puts the Austrian team in so much trouble that the German team has to stop their summit to help get him down for help. During their decent, the mountain eventually kills all four men. The last man, Toni, who is a German climber and the main character of the story dies while a rescue team is trying to save him. It was a sad movie to watch considering it was a true story. I looked up the mountain after the movie, and the two German climbers are honored greatly for the route that they look and their heroism.
Throughout the movie, it was interesting to hear the German language spoken in many different accents. The two German climbers were from Bavaria, and their accent was definitely noticeable when they talked to the journalists from Berlin. Also, the Austrian climbers and the native Swiss at the mountain all had accents of their own, which were interesting to pick out. It was cool to see the landscapes of Bavaria and Switzerland as well. The movie made me want to go out and climb a little but definitely not at The Eiger.
