Kultur 11- Hannah Fuentes
I was shocked when I read that 1 in 5 people would want the Berlin Wall resurrected and how that some of the people living in Berlin can barely remember where it used to be. I thought for sure that something as huge and symbolic as a wall would not be something you could forget or would even want surrounding your city. The article said that about a quarter of "west Germans" want the Wall rebuild and I thought the stereotypes regarding East and West Germans was rather interesting. The East Germans think the Westerners are snobby and know it alls while the West Germans think the East are just a bunch of whiny babies. The "Mauer im Kopf" is definitely not something I though existed.
I was also surprised to read that people want to preserve East German Culture or the DDR Culture. It is cool that the Ampelmännchen that we learned about earlier was something that originated in East Germany and that people are trying to preserve him as the street light. It is good that there is sympathy for those who miss aspects of East Germany and that they are trying to make more of an effort to bring back the nostalgic food and movies they liked.
Finally the I thought the article on north and south Germany was similar with America's perspectives regarding people who live in the south in America versus the north. It seems that both southern Germans and southern Americans both are perceived as dumb hick farmers, (which from my experience down south in America seems fairly accurate) and that those that live in the north are just boring uptight snobs. I just think that it is neat that different countries and culture have their own stereotypes of each other, whether they are true or not is a whole different story...
