Kultur 7- Charles Olken

What I noticed most about from this Kultur lesson is the differentiation of supermarkets. They seem to have a large variety from the likes of Aidi und Wal-Mart to more high quality vendors. Although we too have this selection, the readings suggest that both types of vendors are readily available and the culture surrounding these supermarkets is very different. Such as how lines are formed or based on location, as it states higher quality supermarkets are within walking distances of neighborhoods. Out of the many places I have lived, I have never lived within walking distance of a supermarket. Even living in Kerrytown the closest place is CVS (not counting the farmer's market, which is not regular), und CVS ist kein Supermarkt. And it seems that high quality supermarkets are not available everywhere, Ann Arbor has Whole Foods (which is far away) but when I am at home there is hardly a high quality supermarket let alone one that is near by (and I live within a suburb similar to Ann Arbor).
The driving system was also interesting, considering the author was very pro on not driving in Deutschland. The part that was most different, aside from the Autobahn, was how all the rules are explicit. There is no rule of the road that is implicit, such as right turn on read unless otherwise noted.
The cities that were noted in this unit, München und Stuttgart, were informative. What I've heard about München, that was not mentioned in the text, is that there is a heavy accent associated with it that is almost its own dialect of Deutsch.
The other list in this kultur section, the list of American Foods, was strange consider some of their suspicions of what things we do in culture is wrong. Such as 'tea time', at no point in my life have I ever encountered someone from the United States who has had tea-time. However the list is right about beef jerky- but I think everyone is apprehensive about beef jerky until they try it.
