Meine Gedanken about thrift stores in Deutschland were very conflicting to my thoughts about Billigpreisgeschäften here. The picture painted by the author of the Der Spiegel article about bargain stores in Germany was one of verrücktheit, unhöflichkeit, und schnelligkeit. Old women pushing you out of the way for the best deals; the vegetables are rotting; and spills are seemingly everywhere. It seems like a place where you could krank werden, not a place to find decent, quality bargains! In die Vereinigte Staaten, bargain places are also warehouses, but places that usually offer good products at discounted prices. Indeed, I went on the Aldi website (das Billigpreisgeschäft beschreibt in der Artikel), and I found they have a local branch right here in Ann Arbor (link: http://weeklyads.aldi.us/aldi/default.aspx?action=entryflash&adref=aldistorelocator&StoreRef=1472). It has yet to be seen whether or not the Aldi here can compare to the ones described in Germany, but ich denke, dass die Billigpreisgeschäften in Amerika gut sind, so I have high hopes.

In regards to the food blog by a German regarding amerikanisches essen, I thought it was interesting how the blogger viewed beef jerky, saying at first that, "Sieht aus wie ein Hundesnack," but that he enjoyed the flavorful, if dry, morsels. The blogger then goes on to describe where beef jerky comes from, originally Bisonfleisch, and then how it is made, by slicing Stücke vom Rind, spicing them, and then air-drying them until they are ready to last until the end of time (sie sind unverderblich). There are also many different Sorten of beef jerky as well, the blogger remarks, and his favorite flavors are "süßlichß-rauchige Original oder asiatisch Teriyaki-Aromen." The blogger also remarks that you may try to make your own jerky at home, but he/she has yet to do so. I thought that this was a very interesting Selbstbeobachtung into American eats, and, judging by die Kommentare, it received mixed reviews. (Hier ist ein Link zu Jack Links Beef Jerky Webseite auf Deutsch: http://www.jerkyshop.de/Jack-Links-Beef-Jerky-c-1.html?sid=f9791e6826a59d11211734c89dae7983).

In regards to the last two articles, it seems that traditional German civility and rule-abiding goes out the window on das Autobahn und die Schlangen!
